Altermedia: Embracing Alternatives


Altermedia is not the usual bookstore that one often visits. Altermedia is also not one among the organic stores that have sprung up off late. Altermedia is all about alternatives. Alternatives in ideas, solutions, thought streams, food and lifestyle.  

A few young minds who met at the 1987 Save the Western Ghats Movement decided to start a book store which would also serve as a publishing house. A space that would aid people to reimagine the importance of nature and environment with the kind of books it had. A space to make available to the people national magazines and weeklies of the kind of 'Economic & Political Weekly', which were otherwise not available in Kerala yet. A space to open up possibilities through conversations and transact conversations to actions. 


'The One-Straw Revolution' by Masanobu Fukuoka is considered the Bible of farmers and agricultarists, which has been sold millions of copies worldwide, in multiple languages. Thanks to Altermedia, Malayalam was the first Indian language to which this book was translated. The rights were secured from the author himself when he visited Auroville during the same Western Ghats Movement of 1987. In a few years time, Altermedia even forayed into organic farming thus taking a step ahead for the cause they had associated themselves with. 

The space houses books and magazines with quality content on Education, Schooling, Development, Environment, Sustainability, Farming, Polity, History, Lifestyle and all that an individual is innately linked to. One can also find multiple organic products such as clothes, bags, toys and consumables. Sale of organic fruits and vegetables as well happen on Tuesdays and Fridays. Altermedia is run by Mr. Anilkumar, and operates in Brahmaswom Madom building in MG Road, Thrissur, from Mondays to Saturdays.

It has been a year since the launch of Thrissur Chapter of Rhythm of Nation , a youth NGO committed to e-literacy and environment. Pragat Shaikshanik Maharashtra

Pragat Shaikshanik Maharashtra ( PSM ) is an initiative of the Maharashtra State Government towards an educationally progressive Maharashtra. The RTE Act of 2009 came into effect in the nation on April 1, 2010. In Section 2, clause 3 of the Act, it states that all children between the age group 6–14 years are entitled to receive quality education. Annual status of education (ASER) 2014 survey showed that majority of children in Maharashtra cannot read basic sentences. Considering the statistics, only 27% class 8 students could read a basic text and 31% could divide numbers, in the State of Maharashtra. The state level assessment tests by the Maharashtra State Council of Education and Report (MSCERT) by the year 2014 revealed that the average reading skill of class 5 children was 51% and Math skill was 53%. Lucky Red Seeds

 I remember having a collection of these as a child. But somewhere in the midst of growing up, I lost them. I don't exactly remember when or how. But then it was quite normal. I knew a place where there was a Manjadi tree and I could always collect from there, if I ever wanted them. If I remember well, my association with these lucky red seeds started during my visits to Guruvayoor Temple as a child. One could play with the thousands of these seeds kept inside the big Uruli . That was the favourite part of my temple visit. Later on growing up, my visits to any temple reduced considerably and even stopped.  It was in 2012 when  Manjadikuru the movie got released.
