The Joy of Giving. :)

It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”
  -  Mother Theresa

Recently, a friend of mine narrated to me, an incident that filled my heart with joy. It is certain moments like these that take us a long way forward in life.

From her own words:
" Last day,I hadn't had anything to eat because of exams, and so we walked a lot in the evening to go this cheap place. It was more like a typical market street. As we watched, this really cute looking old man with a bright orange turban in a long kurta walked to a shop just next to our eatery. As we watched, we realized that a 10yr old boy had brought him along to this place, and was pointing at an expensive ball. his granpa tried to make a joke out of the display, which really annoyed the kid, and he walked off crying. You had to see that sullen face in that elderly man, Ashik! So, as we looked at the man, we realized that both he and the boy were begging for money in the streets. That was a shock to both me and ysk (she's my friend), and it was killing to empathise with the grandfather and what he would go through for not being able to fulfill the one wish of his beloved grandson. So we rushed behind both of them and brought them to the store. We bought the boy the ball he wanted, and you had to see that happiness which instantly filled his tiny face! And more heartwarming was the grandfather's look of gratitude as he blessed us, and his gleaming face when he looked at his grandson! "
Such small small moments of joy push us to do more for the less privileged. Thankyou Norin Salim and Ysk Prerana.. You people made my day! :)

When she narrated me this incident, it was something else that came into my mind. A short film we had presented at St.Anne's orphanage, Thrissur. The Joy of Giving. ( I volunteer for an NGO Rhythm of Nation, and as part of the Project LOL campaign we were taking computer classes for kids at the orphanage. So as part of the Republic Day celebrations, we were screening a few few short films and inspirational videos for them.)
So, 'The Joy of Giving' was one of the videos that we screened for the kids over there. Written by Kalki Koechlin, produced by Anurag Kashyap and directed by Shlok Sharma, the short movie deals with the skeptic side of human nature. Yes; the human mind is always filled with doubt, but once he gets to realize his mistake he then tries to correct it. And that little act of kindness might change our lives for ever. It would give us an insight that would would even change the way how we see things. 'The Joy of Giving' is all about that.

And then, just a few days later, I came across an article in a magazine. And it was tremendous joy, reading that.

(Here's the article. Click on the pic and read along.)

It is for moments like these that many of us crave for. Atleast, I crave for.
Altruism is now part of my personal revolution. :)

“I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is joy.”

  1. Read alot...thought alot...really amazing.. u r right... there is a feeling - "joy of giving.." I learnt it frm an orphan girl whn I was a 7th std student. Tht tym our school band set gone for dustrict level competition. In the green room one of my friend told me she 4gt 2 tk white socks which is a part of our school band uniform. The teacher in charge of the band and my friend immediately went to the near by orphanage as she knew one of her student was staying thr. That student was a sports trainee in our school. As soon as she asked a pair of white socks tht girl vanished with out utter any word.aftr 10 mnts she reached and replied..."Ma'am u go pls, I wl bring it with in half an hour". As promised, she gave a pair of wet socks to my friend aftr half an hour. Actually tht girl had only a pair of socks and she was using the same for daily practice.
